Does anyone else have little rituals or traditions to let the new year in?

I have to have someone with dark hair step over our threshhold to let the new year in our house, they have to take a penny, a piece of coal and a slice of bread in with them, that way you never go hungry, be cold or are short of money all year through, does anyone else have these daft rituals too.

In Scotland its known as first-footing and i reckon you've got most of it right. The coal is what I remember, but also some sort of food. We used Black Bun. Can't remember any money. As a kid I was honoured to be the first-foot.

I always pinch my wrist...it's really weird but it's supposed to be good luck so I thought, why not?

Yes, i always get very very pissed, and let off vast amounts of fireworks at the stroke of midnight, then i give my partner a big hug and tell her how much i love her, then i ring a few friends and drunkedly wish them a happy new year.

I enjoy the fireworls most :)

No matter how cold or snowy I get the grill out on new years day and grill a thick steak........

At the stroke of midnight, we eat sour kraut and pork, and have a glass of champagne.

When I was growing up we'd always eat saurkraut and pork on New Year's Eve, I think it's supposed to bring good luck. We'd go outside and bang utensils on pots and pans at the stroke of midnight to welcome in the New Year. An aunt of mine believed that putting an empty purse outdoors on News Year's Eve would assure that she'd have money throughout the year.
